Haiti Earthquake
A devastating earthquake has hit the island of Haiti, causing widespread destruction and countless loss of lives. Haiti is already disadvantaged by being the poorest nation in the western hemisphere and this latest tragedy is not only a short term crisis but a long term disaster and much of the country's infrastructure has been destroyed. The world has responded swiftly, however, due to geographical reasons it is proving hard to get aid and help to the people affected by the earthquake through, and in time to save lives. The above video shows the scale of the destruction with images from the Haiti earthquake demonstrating the sheer scale of the tragedy. You can help by pledging money to help with the rescue effort by visiting the Haiti Earthquake Appeal organised by the Disasters Emergency Committee website here. The Disasters Emergency Committee is comprised of thirteen humanitarian charities that respond to international disasters, sending medical, food and shelter aid to areas of the world stricken by natural and man-made disasters. |
