Child Sponsor Lesotho

Lesotho is a small enclave kingdom within the borders of South Africa with a population of just over two million people and, like many other African countries following independence, has suffered from internal politicking which has left an already disadvantaged country even weaker with high unemployment, near economic collapse and a faltering currency.

The situation has deteriorated further following the worldwide economic slump of 2008-2009 which affected employment opportunities as many Lesotho adults worked in South African mines, but this employment dried up and has not yet recovered.

Whilst life is already difficult in the mountainous kingdom with only 10% of its land being cultivable and most of the rural population reliant on subsistence farming, a recent United Nations report concluded that climate change could shrink this even further to just 3% within twenty five years and furthermore the World Food Program estimates that about 30% of all water reservoirs in Lesotho have now dried up meaning the child population of Lesotho faces a bleak future. Lesotho is in 160th place out of 187 countries and territories in 2011 when ranked in terms of life expectancy, literacy, access to knowledge and the living standards of a country. 30% of all children are orphans with live expectancy not even 40 years. And as they grow up, these children face a real risk of their country facing extinction as AIDS ravages the population of just over 2,000,000. A quarter of all adults have HIV/AIDS and half of all women in the country are now infected.

Just as disturbing, it is estimated that 12,000 children have the virus (not least because 30% of boys report that they have had sex before the age of 15yrs compared with 6% in developed countries) with many of them abandoned on the streets by non parental carers who hold a simple view that these children are going to die anyway so why take on the financial burden of supporting them through childhood. Child sponsor programs in Lesotho work with orphan and abandoned children, work to improve access to water, education and healthcare alongside HIV awareness and prevention programs. You can help when your sponsor a child in Lesotho.
